Try a Little Kindness – Pat’s 100 Years

Pat from Peacehaven in Tasmania has reached 100 years of age and looks back on a life shaped by learning, travel, family and the values she still holds close.

Born after World War I and during the Depression, Pat remembers a childhood where people were poor and illness was common. TB and polio were part of everyday life, and there were no handouts. Even so, she recalls the fun of country dances and the sense of community that came with them.

As a young woman, Pat dreamed of teaching business principles, shorthand and typing, a path she later followed with pride. She has always believed in living a healthy life and not abusing one’s body, which she credits as her secret to reaching 100.

Pat married the love of her life, and they shared 68 years together. Family followed, which has always been important to her. One moment she remembers clearly is watching her granddaughter receive the first ever gold medal for Nursing presented in Tasmania, a day that still feels close.

If Pat could relive one moment, she would choose attending an ANZAC Dawn Service with her father, something that holds deep meaning for her.

Over the years, Pat has created and nurtured many things she is proud of, including her creativity – painting, knitting and sewing. She also travelled widely, with one standout memory: flying on the Concorde, an experience she wishes everyone could have.

Her advice for others is simple and steady: treat people how you would like them to treat you and enjoy life.

Pat’s favourite song is “Try a Little Kindness” by Glen Campbell, a message she has lived by! When asked what Respect means to her, she returned to the same principle: treat people how you would like them to treat you.

Welcome to the 100 Club, Pat!
