Respect Draws on Community Feedback to Unveil New Name for Portland Home
Bayview Haven |
Respect is delighted to share the news that our aged care home in Portland, Victoria, will now officially be named Bayview Haven, following widespread community consultation and a public vote.
The anticipated announcement follows the home’s transfer to Respect in December last year, which ensured Bayview Haven’s support for locals living in Portland would continue now and for generations to come.
Previously operated by Bupa Aged Care, the home was formerly named Bupa Portland. So, coinciding with its transfer, Respect reached out to the home’s staff and residents, as well as the community more broadly, seeking their nominations and input around updating its name.
And following a popular public response, our Managing Director and CEO Jason Binder says the new name, as well as the eagerness of the local community to get involved, epitomised the home’s strong, ongoing link with Portland and the local region.
“As a community-focused organisation, we know how imperative it is to engage local stakeholders in such important decisions that speak to the identity of the home and its connection to the region. We felt it was important to reach out to everyone across the community because we really wanted to ensure they were front and centre of the naming process and in control of leading any change,” Jason says.
“With this in mind, we encouraged name suggestions from staff, residents and the community that spoke to the home’s unique character and culture, including ideas that referenced its close connection to the local area, and we then called on everyone again to have their say through an online survey.”
“We’re delighted that the community has chosen Bayview Haven. Not only does the new name further connect the home with Portland and its historic bay, but we think its introduction signals an exciting new chapter for the home, which we’re proud to be part of.”
As part of the re-naming process, Respect also offered a special prize to the first individual to suggest the name eventually chosen by the public as the winning nomination. This was in the form of a $2,500 cash prize as well as a $2,500 donation to a local charity of their choice.
Respect is looking forward to celebrating the winner and the local charity of their choosing with a special cheque handover in coming weeks.
In light of Bayview Haven’s new name, Jason took the opportunity to again welcome the home’s staff, residents and their families to Respect, calling last year’s merger a positive step forward for local aged care services in Portland.
“Regardless of its new name, we appreciate what Bayview Haven has meant for residents and staff since it first opened its doors in 2011. Above all is the level of support provided to older people, and we recognise the important role that the home plays for so many in the community who rely on local aged care services,” he says.
“We’re committed to continuing that growing culture of care and respect, and we look forward to ensuring Bayview Haven remains on-hand for locals in need, and a wonderful place for our residents to live positive and fulfilling lives.”
