Cyril - Respect 100 Club

Cyril has joined the Respect 100 Club after celebrating his 100th birthday this November.

Born in Lockhart, Cyril grew up in a time he remembered as simple and free. “We didn’t have any crime or problems when I was young – Lockhart was a great place to grow up.”

He was born a farmer and worked as a farmer, Cyril never wanted to do anything else. Farming was not just his job but his way of life.

Cyril met his wife Joan at a dance in his early twenties. It was ladies’ choice and Joan picked him. “She has been the love of my life ever since.” he said.

Cyril and Joan married soon after and have shared a lifetime of happiness together. He says his wedding day was the best day of his life. They will celebrate their diamond anniversary, 75 years of marriage, in February 2026 – a true testament to lasting love.

Local travel has been a highlight for Cyril and Joan. Cyril doesn’t like flying but wishes he had done a bit more of it as he knows Joan would have enjoyed travelling overseas. They enjoyed cruises and spent winters in Yeppoon. Cyril also believes everyone should experience the atmosphere of a live AFL game at the MCG with a huge crowd.

Family is at the heart of Cyril’s story. He is proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who bring him joy every day.

When asked about his secret to reaching 100, Cyril says living healthy, enjoying his wife’s cooking and being sensible with drinking have all played a part. He still enjoys a small nip of wine at night.

Cyril recalls the difficult time of watching his brothers go off to war and the relief of celebrating their safe return. He also remembers seeing Slim Dusty perform in Wagga and counts “Pub with no Beer” as his favourite song.

Respect means a lot to Cyril. He believes it is important to care for staff as kindly as they care for residents. He says Woodhaven is a great place to live and appreciates the cooks, though he prefers chips fried in oil rather than in an air fryer.

Cyril’s advice is simple. Take care of your life, be sensible with drinking and care of your family.
