Joan’s Quiet Life

Isabell known as “Joan” of Riverside Gardens in Nambucca Heads, has reached 100 years of age, a milestone she credits to living a quiet, steady life.  

Born in May 1925 to Lucy and Walter, Joan grew up at home with her parents and four brothers. She left school in her mid‑teens to start working, something that was common at the time.

Joan worked in the local clothing store and found real joy in making clothes, knitting and crocheting. Creating things with her hands became a lifelong source of pleasure, and she is proud of the many dresses she made over the years.

In 1947, Joan married Eric, a bank teller. His work meant they moved often, living in different towns before settling in Nambucca Heads in 1977. When Eric retired, they travelled extensively around Australia — a time Joan remembers fondly and an experience she wishes everyone could have. 

Joan has lived through many chapters of history, though she says nothing stands out as feeling like “yesterday.” Instead, she reflects on her life as a whole, content with where she is now.

She wouldn’t go back to any particular day, saying she is happy where she is at. 

Her advice for others is simple: be happy and easy going. 

Joan enjoys classical music and says she has no regrets about the things she didn’t do – she is satisfied with the life she lived and the choices she made.
