Resident Lissie's Passion Inspires Others to Stay Active

At Respect, we’re always keen to spotlight the wonderful people who make up our communities, and this includes sharing inspiring resident stories about those motivating others to make positive changes in their lives.

Just like Lissie Denison, who will tell you she wasn’t the most active person prior to joining Baw Baw Views but in the last couple of years, she’s developed an ardent passion for staying fit and healthy which is even inspiring others to do the same.

Take a visit to our aged care home in Moe, Victoria, and odds on you’ll see Lissie on one of her daily walks. Whether it’s on one of her favourite routes across Baw Baw Views and its grounds or venturing further into the surrounding community, she’s always happy to say hello and invite you to join her.

“I just love it [walking]. I hate staying still and it’s so good for my health. I used to get a lot of back aches and pains before I joined Baw Baw Views, but in the last couple of years I took up walking every day, and it’s amazing how much better I feel,” she says.

“I feel stronger, I feel fitter, and it’s great for your breathing too. It’s my favourite hobby and I wake up each morning looking forward to taking my first walk.”

Lissie even has a FitBit to help her count her steps. And while she says she doesn’t set specific daily targets, she regularly hits the 12,000 mark. The morning we spoke to her, the clock had just passed 10am and she had already racked up 6,000 steps!

Lissie says she feels proud to have been called an inspiration by others in the Baw Baw Views community, including both staff and her fellow residents.

“I enjoy getting others involved too. It’s a great social activity when you walk with others, and it’s a great way to encourage them to stay active and healthy.”

Lissie’s advice for others looking to get engaged in regular physical activity is simple: start small and grow from there.

“Just do a bit every day and slowly improve from there. The most important thing is to make sure you getting enjoyment out of it. That’s what makes it fun and that’s when you’ll find it most rewarding.”
