“If I Loved You” – 100 Years of Linda

Linda from Autumn Lodge in NSW has reached 100 years of age, and in true Linda fashion, her advice for longevity is as direct as it gets: “I have no secrets, just don’t die.”

Born in 1925, Linda grew up in a lively household opposite a shop. “My world was a very busy one – we lived opposite a shop.”Life was busy, and the world around her was shaped by the Depression – a time she remembers clearly. Money was scarce, and families had to make do with what they had. Those early years taught her to be practical, careful and resourceful, all very important lessons she carried throughout her life.

As a young girl, Linda dreamed of making soft toys. Later, she found work at Holbrooks Canning Factory, where she met the man who would become the love of her life – her husband, Max. “Max was the love of my life.” said Linda.

Linda and Max married in Penshurst on 26 March 1949 and built a life grounded in hard work and partnership. One of Linda’s proudest memories is watching Max build their home with his own hands. 

Thinking back on her life, she says she would relive the days her babies were born, moments she remembers as full of happiness and meaning.  

Her advice for younger generations is steady and sincere: “be careful, look after yourself and save money.” 

Her life has been full of health and happiness – something she wishes everyone could experience and something she has always valued deeply. 

When asked about her favourite song, Linda answered straight away: “If I Loved You.” And when she reflects on the things she wishes she’d had the chance to do, she still thinks about the one dream she missed- joining the Land Army during the war years. 

When asked what Respect means to her, Linda kept it simple: honesty and happiness.
