Cooinda Residents Turn Trash Into Treasure at Local Art Show
Some of our Cooinda (NSW) residents recently took part in a fantastic community initiative called Waste 2 Art, a regional competition organised by Lithgow City Council. This year’s theme, ‘The Year of the Toys’, challenged participants to turn discarded toys into artistic creations.
With guidance from Nicolette, an artist from council, residents worked together to create a bright, beautiful butterfly artwork using only recycled materials. The butterflies were chosen to reflect the meaning of ‘Cooinda’ – an Aboriginal word for ‘Happy Place’ – symbolising joy, peace and beauty.
Their finished piece is now proudly displayed at the stunning Union Theatre in Lithgow alongside other entries. Residents enjoyed a special bus trip to see the exhibition, meet fellow artists, and enjoy a morning tea hosted by Lithgow City Council – what a lovely way to celebrate everyone’s hard work!
Once the exhibition wraps up, the butterfly artwork will return to its forever home at Cooinda for all to enjoy.
