Clare’s Century – A healthy, Uncomplicated Life
The 100 Club |
At 100 years old, Clare from Autumn Lodge in NSW, looks back on a life built through determination, family and the choices that shaped her path.
Clare’s secret to reaching 100 is simple: “I lived my life as naturally as I could. No drink, no smoke.” She laughs as she adds that she’s no wowser – she enjoyed a drink on special occasions, just not as a habit.
Born in 1926, Clare remembers her childhood as a wonderful time. She walked to school each day, ate “good, clean food” and enjoyed a life that felt healthy and uncomplicated.
She later earned a scholarship to Stotts Business College and moved to Sydney to study shorthand, typing and business. She caught the tram into the city each day and completed her two‑year course in just 18 months.

Clare met her future husband, Ted, at a dance in Taylors Arm. After they married, they settled on their 120‑acre farm in South Bank, where they lived and worked side by side for more than 50 years. Their wedding day – along with the birth of her children – remains the happiest memories of her life.
When asked about her goal growing up, she said “to be good wife and Mother.”
Musically talented Clare played the piano not just for her own pleasure but at dances and events. She says, “I like all music.”
Clare is proud of the life she built through hard work and determination. She says she achieved everything she wanted in life and has no regrets. The greatest joy she wishes everyone could experience is becoming a parent.

Her advice for younger generations is clear and heartfelt: be more understanding and respectful of your elders.
When asked what Respect means to her, Clare said she is grateful for her physical and mental health, and for the care she receives at Autumn Lodge.
“I’m getting well looked after here in my old age,” she said.
