- 1995: ‘The Compton Downs site’ was the brainchild of local MP Harry Quick, who in 1995 identified a need for an aged care home in the local area. The surrounding communities were rife with unemployment at the time, so a major condition of the project was that local tradesmen and labourers would be used in the development project. Hobart-based aged care home St Ann’s purchased the land for what would become Wellington Views from the local council for the princely sum of $1. They then set about creating a unique aged care development involving a collection of “small houses” to create a ‘more homely’ aged care experience for future residents. The home was developed across 16 hectares to include sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and Derwent River. More recently the Royal Commission into Aged Care in Australia has strongly endorsed the small houses model, which shows the designers of this home were well ahead of their time! With the addition of a retirement village and the expansion of residential housing nearby, the home’s small suburb of facilities became known as Compton Downs across the community. Later, the home was then renamed Wellington Views – an apt choice considering it spectacular and unique mountain and river panoramas.
- 2016: Respect took management of Wellington Views in 2016 and is proud to continue the home’s exemplary history of care and support for residents and their families across the surrounding communities.
