What is a Level 2 Home Care Package?

A significant number of senior Australians are currently accessing home care through the Home Care Package Program, a government-subsidised initiative connecting them with the care services they need, delivered in the comfort of their own homes.

In this post, let’s take a closer look at Level 2 Home Care Packages – what they are, what they include, and how they can help you or your loved ones stay healthy and happy as you age.

What is a Level 2 Home Care Package?

A Level 2 Home Care Package is a government-funded program designed to help older Australians stay healthy and continue to live independently in their own homes by providing them with a range of services and support. This package is suitable for people who have low-level care needs and require some help with daily living activities, such as cleaning, cooking, or personal care.

What does a Level 2 Home Care Package include?

The services provided by a Level 2 Home Care Package can include:

  • Assistance with household tasks, such as cleaning and laundry
  • Personal care, such as help with bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Transport assistance, such as help getting to appointments or social outings
  • Nursing care and medication management
  • Allied health services, such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy
  • Social support, such as companionship or social activities
  • Home modifications or equipment to make the home safer and more accessible

How do you access a Level 2 Home Care Package?

To access a Level 2 Home Care Package, you will need to go through a process of assessment and approval. This can be done via My Aged Care, which is a great resource to help you navigate the aged care system.

The first step is to contact My Aged Care and request an assessment. An assessor will then visit you in your home to determine your eligibility and care needs. They will also discuss the types of services that may be suitable for you and provide information on the costs involved.

Once you have been approved for a Level 2 Home Care Package, you will be placed on a national priority list. When a package becomes available, you will be contacted and offered a package. You will then have the opportunity to choose a provider who will work with you to develop a care plan tailored to your individual needs.

How much does a Level 2 Home Care Package cost?

Your home care services will be scheduled based on your preferences and care needs. Service price is set by your home care provider and will vary depending on the type of service or care you require. In addition, your initial service budget will be determined by the amount of government funding associated with your allocated home care package and, on top of this, the government may also require you to pay an income tested fee towards your care needs. For more information on costs and how they may be applied to your home care package, see our complete home care guide.

How can a Level 2 Home Care Package help you or your loved ones?

A Level 2 Home Care Package can provide valuable support and assistance to older Australians who wish to continue living independently in their own homes. The package can help with daily tasks, such as cleaning, cooking, and personal care, as well as provide access to nursing care, allied health services, and social support.

For example, if you have mobility issues, a Level 2 Home Care Package may provide you with equipment such as mobility aids, home modifications, or grab rails, which can make it easier and safer for you to move around your home. Additionally, if you have health issues that require regular medical attention, a Level 2 Home Care Package may provide you with access to a nurse or health professional who can help you manage your medication and monitor your health.

A Level 2 Home Care Package can also help to reduce social isolation by providing access to social support and companionship opportunities. This can include services such as transport to social outings and activities or visits from a volunteer companion.
