At Home, with Respect: Barbara’s Story

Support at Home |

At Respect, we are fortunate to walk alongside many older Australians who choose to stay living in the homes they love.

And today, we are celebrating Barbara, whose story reminds us why being supported at home matters so much.

Meet Barbara

Barbara has lived a full and active life. She and her late husband were always on the go, often choosing to walk wherever they needed to be.

But home has always been her anchor, filled with memories she treasures and routines she still enjoys. Even as her health needs changed and she began experiencing falls, her wish remained simple. She wanted to stay exactly where she feels safe, comfortable and herself.

So when Barbara started receiving support at home, it wasn’t about giving up independence. It was about protecting it.

As certain tasks became harder, she continued to manage what she could while receiving help with more physical chores, such as vacuuming or cleaning. She still enjoys keeping her home the way she likes it and says the support she receives seamlessly fills the gap without taking away her sense of control.

Barbara says she relies on the team more than people realise, and she credits them with helping her stay safe and connected. Her honest words remind us why this work matters. When someone feels supported, seen and secure, home continues to be the place where they can live independently and comfortably.

Stories like Barbara’s show the quiet strength older Australians hold. They also show what respectful, person-centred support can make possible.

We’re here to support you

Barbara’s journey is a gentle reminder that ageing does not have to mean leaving the place you love. With support that fits around the person, rather than the other way around, home can stay home.
